GREETING

GREETING COMES BEFORE TALKING

  • The greeting is before talking. (Ramuz al-Ahadith)

HANDS SHOULD BE SHAKEN ALONG WITH GREETING

  • The greeting is completed through handshaking. (Ramuz al-Ahadith)

WHO SHOULD GREET WHOM

  • The younger should greet the older one; the single person should greet the twosome; a small party should greet a larger party; a rider should greet a pedestrian; a pedestrian should greet the one who is sitting and the standing one should greet the sitting one. (Ramuz al-Ahadith)

GREETING IS UTTERED UPON ENTRY AND EXIT

  • When someone from you arrives at a community, he should utter greetings and do the same upon his departure because the first greeting is not more important than the second one. (Nasai)

HOW TO GREET WHEN ENTERING AN EMPTY HOUSE?

  • Abdullah Ibn Umar (RA) said: “When someone enters an empty house, he should say the following: “Peace be upon us, and upon God’s righteous slaves.” (as-salamu 'alayna wa 'ala 'ibadillah as-salihin) (Bukhari, Adab-ul Mufrad)

CHILDREN SHOULD BE GREETED TOO

  • Anas Ibn Malik (RA) narrates: “The apostle of God (PBUH) used to visit Ansar and greet their children, caress their heads and pray for them.” (Nasai)

GREETING IN THE TOILET IS NOT PERMISSIBLE

  • Abdullah Ibn Umar (RA) narrates: “A person greeted the apostle of God (PBUH) while he was in the toilet but the apostle of God did not answer his greeting. (Muslim)… (Abu Davud’s narration): “Then, he explained the reason why he did not answer: “I did not find it appropriate to mention God’s name while I was not clean.” (Abu Davud)

THE BLIND SHOULD BE GREETED PARTICULARLY

  • Not greeting the blind is betrayal. (Ramuz al-Ahadith)

THE WRONG WAY OF GREETING

  • Do not greet the way that Jews do. They greet by using their head and hands. (Nasai)

(Explanation: It is clearly understood from this hadith that only hand and head gesture for the purpose of greeting is not permissible. It is also understood from the narration given above that there is no objection in using the verbal expression of greeting along with a hand gesture. There is also no objection to use the hand gesture where there is a distance that prevents the answer from being heard or by a person who is in an unfavorable situation.)

  • What behavior do you have? You are using hand gestures like horses that wag their tails under the sun. When one of you greets, he should turn towards his friends; he should avoid gesture of hand. (Ramuz al-Ahadith)
