DRINKING WATER

WATER IS DRUNK BY RESTING

  • Do not drink water in one breath. Drink it in two, three breaths by resting. Recite Basmala before drinking. Once you finish, praise Allah. (Tirmidhi.)

EXHALING INTO THE GLASS IS NOT PERMISSEBLE

  • When you drink water, do not exhale into the glass. (Bukhari)

(Explanation: Drinking water in three breathing is essential in other hadiths. Exhaling into the glass is in question when someone drinks the water in three breaths by leaning his mouth against the glass and not detaching his mouth from it and as a result he breathes into it. So, this is the prohibited way. In this case, the hadith orders man to drink water in three pauses without hurrying by detaching the mouth from the glass in every pause along with a breath.)

THE WATER THAT CONTAINS DIRT IS POURED OUT

  • Abu’l-Musanna al-Juhani (RA) narrates: “Abu Said (RA) went to Marwan. Marwan said to him, “Have you heard that the Messenger of God (PBUH) forbade blowing into drinks?” Abu Said said to him, 'Yes.' And he narrated the following: A man said to the Apostle of God, 'I am not quenched from one breath.” The Messenger of God answered: “Remove the cup from your mouth and then breathe.' Upon this He asked, “what happens if I see something floating in it?' He said, 'Then pour it out.” (Muwatta)

Moreover, he forbade us to drink by using one palm or by handfuls and said: “Beware of drinking water with lips like dogs! And you should not drink with one hand like the ruined nation by Allah. You should also not drink it without shaking it, but there is no need to shake if its top is covered.” (Ibn Majah)
